SURFERS TAKE MANHATTAN

Surfers’ Environmental Alliance Announces Paddle Around Manhattan to Benefit Autism Awareness

Sea Bright, New Jersey & Haleiwa, Hawaii, May 2, 2007 — The Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) announced today that it is organizing the first ever surf paddle around the island of Manhattan, New York City. The invitation-only, 28-mile paddle will take place on Monday, July 16th and will be completed by about two-dozen participants. Participants will be on stand-up paddleboards and traditional surfboards. All proceeds will benefit Surfers Healing, Autism Speaks, NJCOSAC and SEA.

“SEA Paddle NYC will help create awareness of our organization’s fight to preserve our coastal waterways, while raising money for a condition that is more prevalent in New Jersey than any other state,” said Andrew Mencinsky, Executive Director of SEA. He continued, “Surfing and being in the ocean has also proven to provide autistic kids a rare sense of calm and tranquility. This event is a win-win for everyone involved.” Please go to surfershealing.org for more information.

SEA Paddle NYC is the brainchild of Mr. Mencinsky SEA Executive Director and Darrick Doerner, master waterman, North Shore lifeguard for 25 years, founder of Surf Education Adventures(DD-SEA) and board member of SEA. This event will also feature world-renowned surfer Gerry Lopez, who was personally invited by Mr. Doerner. Gerry Lopez, aka “King of the Pipeline” is a legendary Hawaiian waterman, innovative surfboard shaper, sensei and yoga master. He will be paddling alongside Doerner, Mencinsky and the other participants. The paddle route will begin in the South Street Seaport vicinity and continue up the East River into the Harlem River, then down the Hudson River, ending at Battery Park City.

For more information regarding sponsorship, donations or other participation in SEA Paddle NYC, contact Andrew Mencinsky at 732-804-4096, Darrick Doerner at 888-HALIEWA, or visit seapaddlenyc.org

December 2006: Marii Sugiura

"There are many differences (between Japan and America). The first time I came here I was very surprised about the foods. There are very big portions here...like twice as much! When we go to the hamburger shop, such a BIG hamburger and so many fried potatoes. I can't finish it all! Never! Everything is big here I think. The people are different, very friendly here. Ah yeah, I like it."
